My School Library Philosophy and Vision
Philosophy:
My philosophy for school libraries is based on a few simple beliefs: First, I believe the school library and the media specialist must strive to support the entire learning community to the fullest extent possible, including students, teachers, administrators, and families. This is done by providing resources that support the goals and curriculum of the school and educating the learning community on the use of these resources. Finally, I believe the media specialist must become a leader within the school by establishing and maintaining collaborative and respectful relationships with members of the learning community.
Vision:
The school library program I envision incorporates the following ideas:

For further description of my philosophy and vision for an elementary school library, please listen to the following podcast. It was created in the fall of 2011 as part of my course work at the School of Information and Library Science at UNC-Chapel Hill. I have included it in this portfolio because it further illustrates my philosophy and vision as well as demonstrates my ability to use the software and equipment needed to create and edit a podcast. Vision:
The school library program I envision incorporates the following ideas:
- It must reflect the both the school and local communities to meet the needs of its stakeholders.
- The collection and programs must be regularly evaluated to ensure they are effective.
- Library resources and space should be used as efficiently and effectively as possible.
- Open access to the library should be offered through the use of flexible scheduling, extended hours, and the library's website.
- Individual students should have access to the library at any time during the academic day.
- The school library media specialist should work collaboratively with teachers to create lessons and units that integrate instruction with information literacy skills and technology.
- Library activities should be made transparent through the use of newsletters, regular reports, and the library's website.
- Families should be provided with access to the library and events to encourage the development of family literacy.
- The library should support the professional development efforts of teachers.
