Teaching Artifacts
One of the most important roles of the School Library Media Specialist is that of teacher. With my background in elementary education, I have had many enriching experiences that will make me stronger in my future career. My educational experiences in the library science program have also offered much insight into ways of incorporating my skills and adapting them to suit the ever changing role of the School Library Media Specialist. In this section, you will find some of the artifacts I have generated during each of these experiences that demonstrate my teaching abilities.
As a Classroom Teacher...
Adjectives Lesson Plan: I created this lesson for my third grade students in February 2010. It uses the Learning Focused lesson plan format and incorporates technology through online stories and games using the Activ Board that was installed in my classroom. I chose this artifact because it shows my ability to plan engaging lessons that incorporate ongoing assessment through activation and summarizing strategies as well as multiple assessment prompts incorporated throughout the lesson.
As a Library Science Student...
Vision for an Instructional Library Program: This paper and visual aid were developed in April 2011 as a project for the Curriculum and the School Library Media Specialist class. In it, I address the faculty and administrators of a fictitious school to inform give them a detailed illustration of an exemplary school library instructional program that includes the adoption of The Big6 research model. I believe this artifact illustrates my communication and leadership abilities through the clear description and awareness of audience as well as the design of the program. I also think this document shows the value I place on inquiry based instruction.
If you Liked Charles and Emma Book Trailer and Reading Recommendation List: I created this book trailer and resource list in March 2011 for my class in Young Adult Literature. The site is based on the book, Charles & Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith, by Deborah Heiligman and includes a trailer for the book as well as several lists of other resources including related fiction and non-fiction. I am particularly proud of these lists because I did extensive research to find resources in the public domain and create links to them in multiple formats including plain text, audio, and Kindle e-books. This artifact shows my ability to use Google Sites for web development and Windows Movie Maker as a tool to create book trailers. It also shows my dedication to providing students with access to materials they find interesting and relevant.
India's Golden Age: A Pathfinder: This pathfinder was developed with another student in April 2011. It is based on a ninth grade social studies standard for students in North Carolina and includes information literacy instruction for research and lists of print and web based resources that relate to the standard. This artifact demonstrates my capabilities with Word Press and my ability to provide library instruction using an online tool. It also shows my ability to serve library users in a reference capacity.
